C'è un sorriso d'amore,

e c'è un sorriso della seduzione,

un sorriso c'è dei sorrisi

dove s'incontrano quei due sorrisi.

C'è un aggrottamento dell'odio,

e c'è un aggrottamento di disdegno,

ed un aggrottamento c'è degli aggrottamenti

di cui invano tentate di scordarvi,

poichè a fondo nel profondo del cuore penetra,

e affonda nelle midolla delle ossa -

e mai nessun sorriso fu sorriso,

ma solo quel sorriso solo,

sorriso che dalla culla alla fossa

sorridere si può una volta sola;

quando è sorriso,

ha fine ogni miseria.

THE SMILE

There is a smile of love,

and there is a smile of deceit;

and there is a smile of smiles,

in which these two smiles meet.

And there is a frown of hate,

and there is a frown of disdain;

and there is a frown of frowns

which you strive to forget in vain,

For it sticks in the heart's deep core,

and it sticks in the deep backbone.

And no smile that ever was smiled,

but only one smile alone --

That betwixt the cradle and grave

it only once smiled can be,

but when it once is smiled

there's an end to all misery.
